Warren resigns as chief justice after 15-year tenure

Earl Warren 77 reportedly sent his resignation to President Johnson after the 1967 68 term ended. Sources say he sought to preserve the court's liberal balance and allow Johnson to name a successor. The White House and Warren's office offered no comment.

Summer Arrives Quietly with 47 Degree Morning

The first summer day opened with a cool start as Cleveland Hopkins Airport recorded 47 degrees. Officials note the temperature tied a 1882 record, while the official arrival time was 4 13 a m. Forecasters expect 80s later today but warn cooler weekend showers and thunderstorms.

The forecast calls for showers becoming mostly cloudy and warmer today with a few light showers in the forenoon and scattered thundershowers by night. Highs in the low to mid 80s, lows upper 50s to low 60s. Thundershowers end tomorrow afternoon with partial clearing and cooler air.

Elyria Soldier Killed in Vietnam

PFC Norman Jones Jr., 20, son of Mr and Mrs Norman Jones of 244 West River Street, was killed Tuesday in Vietnam during a firefight. He had served since September 1967, attended Elyria High School, and served with the 105th Airborne Division Co D and 7th Infantry near Dak To. He is survived by his parents, a brother, and five sisters. Funeral arrangements are pending with Carter Funeral Home, Lorain.

Three Die and Eight Hurt in Oberlin Two-Car Crash

A two-car crash at the Russia Road Oberlin Road junction near Oberlin reported five injuries and three deaths. Victims include Albert Pretzer Jr., 40, and his 13 year old daughter Debbie and 13 year old Julie McKenzie. The other car involved was driven by Charles Ricardo White, 24, with his wife Gwynneth 20 and two children among the injured. Police say White failed to yield at a stop sign. investigation ongoing with no charges filed.

Trucker Car Crash Near New London Kills Two

A Millersburg resident and her grandson died when their car collided with a westbound tractor trailer at the Rt 60 Rt 224 intersection four miles south of New London. Five others in the car were injured. Ralph Mikesell and his family were treated. Lora Sue Airhart remained hospitalized in satisfactory condition.

Derby racers face Sunday inspection in Lorain county

The first semi final inspection for the Lorain County Soap Box Derby will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. on the west side of the Sheffield Shopping Center. Cars must pass inspection to avoid disqualification and helmets are hoped to arrive from Detroit for distribution.
