Wham-O origin story and toy hits from founders Melin and Kneer
Wham-O began with Melin and Kneer choosing a bold name. The Hula Hoop launched in 1958 selling 25 million in months and over 100 million in two years, while the Frisbee evolved from Pluto Platter after college kids tossed pie tins. The duo also rolled out Monster Magnet, Super Ball, and Silly String before selling Wham-O in 1983 to Kransco, then Mattel in 1994.
