The stock market opened lower as the Dow Jones industrial average fell 6.63 to 1,125.00 in the first half hour. Losers led gainers 7 to 6 among NYSE issues as traders weighed the lack of an IBM stock buyback offer and concerns that strong growth could push rates higher.
AP reports from Columbus Chicago and New York show varied prices for eggs and nonferrous metals. Egg prices in Ohio list sizes from extra large to small while Midwest reports wholesale egg prices mostly unchanged. Nonferrous metals quote copper lead zinc tin aluminum gold silver and mercury with small to moderate shifts noted.
Erie welder Theo dore Hull testified before the Senate Labor Committee that at the Perry nuclear plant construction near Cleveland supervisors directed workers to hide and do little work for days while drinking, sleeping, and marijuana use occurred. He cited another site with a $400 weekly cocaine habit managed with supervisor awareness.
A Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co spokesman says strict rules ban drugs and alcohol on site at the Perry nuclear plant and workers have been fired for drinking in the parking lot. He notes occasional issues are possible with about 6,000 on site but denies a widespread problem.
