Brain drain fears overblown in 1980 census for northeast Ohio

The 1980 census shows every urban Ohio county had a net loss overall, with 33 suburban and rural counties gaining. In the seven-county Cleveland area Medina Geauga and Portage posted net in migration while Cuyahoga and Summit lost in all age groups. Lorain and Lake counties show mixed gains and losses by age, and youth outmigration is less severe than feared. The trend aligns closely with Fred McGunagle’s May 1983 estimates using census migration data and state birth/death figures.
