A JAMA Internal Medicine study of about 137000 Medicare beneficiaries who survived an overdose in 2020 shows half received opioid painkillers while only 4 percent got addiction treatments like buprenorphine. Within a year, 17 percent had another nonfatal overdose and 1 percent died. experts call for better monitoring, naloxone access, and comprehensive coverage, including methadone, to close longstanding care gaps.
