Storm wrecks damage in Grafton area downing trees and poles
Crews work around the clock after a Tuesday thunderstorm in Grafton and Eaton Township toppled dozens of trees and about 20 utility poles. Route 83 and Capel Road remained impassable, with ODOT closing Route 83 between Route 82 and Grafton Eastern through today. More than 1,200 Lorain County homes lost power as FirstEnergy reported widespread damage from the downburst.

Elyria man in custody after Nebraska rest stop killing
James Thompson Jr., 22, of Elyria, is in custody after an alleged attempt to rob an elderly Missouri couple at an I-80 rest area in Hall County Nebraska. He allegedly stabbed both, killing the husband Gary Weaver 72, of Eureka Missouri while Mary Weaver 71 survived. The incident occurred near mile marker 316. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office released details on Facebook and said charges were not yet clear.

Avon Lake Schools seeks bond for new schools and renovations
Avon Lake Schools Board approves two ballot measures for November. A construction bond of about 155 million dollars to fund two new elementary schools and a middle school plus renovations to Avon Lake High School, repayable over 37 years, and a separate 5 million dollar annual operating levy for 10 years. The two will appear separately, with linked funding aims. Previously voters rejected a 170 million construction bond in a similar plan.
