A chaotic Elyria council session led by Councilman Elmer Nelson devolved into repeated adjournment motions with Nelson forcing delays while Mayor Vanoster and others argued over building code enforcement. The clash included harsh exchanges, procedural fights, and a looming clash with the mayor’s address as officials weighed adherence to by laws and council prerogatives.
Ohio weather forecast indicates showers tonight with a continuation into Wednesday. Cooler air expected especially in the southern portions as a cold front moves through.
Three veteran teachers at St Pauls Evangelical Sunday School total 105 years in service. Mrs Charles Schultz led German adult classes for 22 years after 4 years teaching, Albert Pallas taught boys 28 years with 18 years in leadership roles, and Karl Lehman taught 27 years while serving as superintendent and in multiple offices.
Judge Guy B Findley was elected chairman of the new Elyria district Boy Scout council while 27 locals were named as members. The district will supervise scouting in Elyria and nearby areas and connect with the Firelands Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The group approved joining the Firelands Area Council unanimously with Judge Findley to serve as one of four vice presidents.
London reports that Britain and Germany reached an official agreement on relative naval strength. Germany will hold a fleet no larger than 35 percent of Britain’s total tonnage, with matching limits for each class of warship and allowances for transfers within the cap. Further technical talks are planned in the coming days through Friday.
Hamilton Ohio June 18 Ralph Gray 25 of Hamilton was shot and killed instantly by Patrolman Joseph McFall early today at the Eikenberry Brothers Company feed mill. A second man escaped after a shot from McFall. The officer said Gray rushed him after entering the mill office.
Elyria Post No 12 of the American Legion outlines plans for the Fifth district convention covering ten Ohio counties between Cleveland and Toledo with 56 posts. The event, Aug 3 and 4, includes a business session, a military ball, religious services, and a dedication of Gates Hospital pool.
The senate commerce committee voted unanimously to investigate graft and corruption charges raised by Ewing Y. Mitchell, the ousted assistant secretary of commerce. Mitchell asked Roosevelt for appointment as special assistant to the attorney general to root out graft and waste in the department of commerce.
In Omaha, Governor Roy L. Cochran rejected the Omaha Council Bluffs street railway’s arbitration reservations after the riot tied up trolley service. Police used riot guns and tear gas, two rioters were killed, and 1,800 National Guardsmen kept martial law as demonstrations continued in South Omaha.
President Roosevelt announced that Ohio will gain at least 184 million dollars from the Works Progress Administration for federal job programs. WPA chief Harry Hopkins and Ohio relief director Charles Stillman discussed a statewide project schedule, with potential increases up to twenty percent to aid 345,000 relief families. Additional funds include 35 million for civilian camps, 30 million for low cost housing, and 16 million for highway work and other loans and grants.
Ohio Governor Martin L. Davey cut almost 9.9 million from a 97.9 million general appropriations bill, sparing the highway department. He warned of further reductions after the sheriff’s report and signaled more cuts to state payrolls. He argued increases in the bill reflected higher costs and new agencies, and blasted the weathering of the public’s finances amid a broad trimming.
Edwin B Redhead rector of St Andrew's Church is awarded a Doctor of Divinity by Kenyon College at commencement. Kenyon noted his long parish leadership in Ohio including 13 years on the Standing Committee and service in the Department of Missions. Other honorary degree recipients included Brerd Cleveland Aldrich New York City Kindner Detroit Clark Marquette.
Two bids were received for building the Tannery Street ejector station, the final of three sewer projects. T J Hume Elsha and Lorain bid 4135, Henri Heid rich Elsina bid 3778, with the contract not yet awarded at noon.
Kansas prison mutiny report from Lansing describes striking prisoners barricading themselves 720 feet underground at a coal mine. Warden Lacey M. Simpson positioned twenty guards with tear gas, as Robert Murray the mine superintendent relayed leaders’ word. Communication lines were cut, leaving no clear demands.
A Lorain civil service hearing on Police Chief Theo A Walker nears a crisis as Judge Guy B Findley orders witness Xavier North to answer a key question about who recruited him as a special vice investigator for Mayor E A Braun. North may face contempt of court, risking fine or imprisonment, if he persists in refusing.
Council last night passed two water main bond ordinances amid broad denunciation by Councilman Elmer Nelson of the water works program. Nelson argued the department is overbonded and costly, noting $2,750,000 in bonds since 1898 with $1,300,000 unpaid and interest surpassing the debt. He said a new intake and 3 inch main are unnecessary until lake intake is built, costing over $150,000. Councilman William G. Smith contended the upgrade is needed and warned a downtown fire could show urgency.
The toll of flood and storm in Texas rose to 20 with water pouring down a dozen major streams toward the Gulf. Six additional deaths were reported today as the flood spread across the state.
The Ohio Grand Lodge meets in town and plans a grand parade through decorated streets. Four hundred Patriarchs Militant will lead, with at least three musical groups including the Odd Fellows Children’s Home Band from Springfield, the Akron Odd Fellows Band, and Elyna High School Band. Gather at 6:30 p.m. and start at 7:00.
Delegates at the 103rd Grand Lodge of Ohio Odd Fellows convened today with a reception and banquet at the First M.E. Church, followed by an 8 p.m. public meeting. Expectation of Governor Davey’s attendance was uncertain. Grand Master Angerman and Deputy Grand Master Bailey were slated to speak.
