Malaysia threats to shoot on sight over Vietnamese refugees
Envoys reacted with shock as Malaysia vowed to use force to repel Vietnamese refugees and to shoot on sight if any enter Malaysian territory. Diplomats said the move aimed to draw world attention, with Canada signaling a higher refugee quota and the United States seeking clarification. Hong Kong officials called the plan unworkable, warning of drownings at sea, while UN officials urged restraint and third-country resettlement.
