President Hoover promised to sign the Smoot-Hawley tariff within days, saying he would address injustices later. Republicans praise the move while Democrats warn it becomes a political issue. The statement aims to stabilize business and influence upcoming congressional campaigns.
Lorain County Commissioners by unanimous vote extended the tax payment deadline by thirty days to July 20. The move aims to ease hardship for unemployed families and assist taxpayers in adjusting finances, even as it impacts the county’s improvement program. County treasurer N. D. Backus indicated his office will adapt to the new deadline, noting earlier guidance that taxes were due by June 20 and that about a thousand inquiries had been told no extension. He welcomed the extension for its potential relief to taxpayers.
Rain whipped breakers and squalls hampered the Toledo search for eight men feared drowned after their speed boat foundered near East Sister Island on Lake Erie. Coasts guards and Toledo Yacht Club boats scoured the area as airplanes searched fog shrouded skies with no trace found. Names include Charles H. Nants and Herbert Nants, Franklin B. Jones, Harry J. Hambach, Arthur E. Kruse, Frank Miller, John Meyers, and others as the boat was found waterlogged with hatch broken.
Horton B. Alger reports 404 soil samples from all parts of Lorain County were tested by the Ohio State University extension soils truck. Results show most soils need lime. The day’s high was 59 tests at Brownhelm, with 160 tested that day in Henrietta and surrounding areas.
Oberlin College will award diplomas to 343 graduates at Finney Chapel tomorrow at 10 am during the ninety-seventh commencement. Dr Edwin M Borchard Yale Law professor will deliver the address on International Relations and the American Citizen. The baccalaureate sermon was delivered by Rev Harold Cooke Phillips of Cleveland with themes on the Kingdom of Truth and the value of personality and human relations.
Oberlin Ohio June 16 thousands of visitors expected for the ninety seventh commencement illumination night with the alumni parade through village streets. Japanese lanterns decorate campus and surrounding area as the annual event proceeds unless heavy rain interrupts. Judges for the parade include Dudley White Norwalk and his wife, W H Phillips Oberlin and his wife, and A C Hudnutt Elyria and his wife.
The Spring Court of Honor for Lorain County Council will be held at First Congregational Church Elyria at 7 30 Friday evening. One hundred nine receiving honors including Second class First class Star Life Eagle and Eagle Palm Scouts with over three hundred Merit badges. Conducted by district committees led by E W Rule council commissioner Theodore Foley will attend. Open to the public.
Hammond Indiana June 16 A borrowed army plane plowed into a parked car during the Ruby Speedway races killing three spectators Peter Brockman 45 Mrs Brockman 44 and Virginia Sterling 2 near death to Mrs Ernestine Sterling 22 and leaving pilot Wilson V Newhall and mechanic James H Van Meter unhurt The crash stunned about 7000 spectators as Newhall a World War I aviator lent the plane for a joy ride from the 108th National Guard Air Squadron where he serves as lieutenant.
Three members of the Clair Klinger family died when their car, unaware of an approaching one way bridge, was struck by a truck hauling two trailers on State Route 18. A 12 year old daughter survived with minor injuries as authorities investigated and held the bodies at a Wellington mortuary.
One hundred sixty eight children from kindergarten to eighth grade joined the first session at First Baptist church today. Superintendent Miss Ruth B B Taylor cites weather and a town circus for the smaller opening-day turnout, with assembly from 8:30 to 9:00. Miss Lois Ketcham played piano, Miss Taylor led song, Irene and Richard Upton performed a piano duet, and Rev. R T Ketcham gave an illustrated talk. Classes in East avenue building totaled forty two pupils. A voluntary missionary offering will be taken tomorrow. Dismissal at eleven allowed a circus parade viewing.
In Portsmouth on June 16 county officers hunted Robey Cooper, 38, sought for the alleged shooting of Fred Cooper, 48, at Bloody Twin Creek near town. Fred Cooper was reported in critical condition after being shot as he drove past Robey Cooper's home, witnesses said.
Columbus reports state penitentiary guards joined by city and county officers in an intensive search for Charles Agree aged 32 and Henry Jones aged 24 who escaped from a quarry camp on Sunday after scaling a nine foot fence. The men are convicts at large and authorities urge any information leading to their capture.
A plane attempting takeoff from a muddy field failed to gain lift in time, striking a row of automobiles parked around the race track. No injuries are reported, and investigators assess the incident's cause and liability.
Martin Smith, 40, of South Amherst, drowned in Beaver Creek near Beaver Park Saturday night while crossing what he believed was a sand bar. A nearby boy tried to help but failed. Coroner M E Perry investigated the death. Smith, who worked at quarries, leaves a brother Andrew Smith of Cleveland. Funeral services set for Tuesday afternoon at Zilch funeral home.
A United Press survey shows more than twenty people died in Ohio auto crashes during a weekend of heavy traffic. Victims include Clair and Mildred Klinger and their five year old son in Wellington, Canton men James Jones William Matthis and Aldrich Lee, Barberton and Columbus deaths, and many others across Cleveland Toledo Defiance and Greenville. Several other disasters including shootings drownings and a pension of tragedies were reported as the toll rose.
Edison consents to name a Milan to Sandusky highway the Edison Highway. The route links Sandusky with the three C's highway near Centerbury in Knox county. In a letter to William Kennedy, Edison says the honor gives him pleasure and he is proud of the civic esteem.
Lorain County farmers greeted welcome rain that nourished oats and clover and benefited all crops. County agricultural extension agent Horton B. Alger stated the showers should deeply soak the soil and provide valuable relief after a period of drought.

Commander Stanley V. Parker testified that many lives might have been saved if Coast Guard cutter Tampa had been summoned during the Fairfax Pinthis disaster. Forty seven people perished when the Fairfax rammed and sank the oil tanker Pinthis in fog off Scituate last Tuesday night.
