Bombing failure led to ground war says study

New York Times reports a Pentagon study concluding that on April 1 1965 President Johnson ordered offensive ground operations after a month of bombing North Vietnam failed to prompt a response. The measure aimed to conceal policy shifts while expanding U.S. troop presence and shifting to search and destroy missions in South Vietnam.

U.S. seeks halt to Times report on Vietnam study

Attorney General John Mitchell announced the Justice Department will seek an injunction to block publication of a 47 volume Defense Department study on Vietnam. A temporary restraining order would prevent further excerpts, cited as irreparable injury to national defense. Secretary Rogers called the publication a serious violation of law.

Violence sparks fires in Albuquerque amid clashes with police

In Albuquerque, a wave of fires and violence followed police and National Guard confrontations with youths in Roosevelt Park and at the University of New Mexico campus. Police said 150 arrests, 14 gunshot injuries, and widespread property damage occurred as a 1 AM to 6 AM curfew was imposed and firebombs sparked eight fires early today, with nationwide threats and looting reported.

Vermilion Youth Dies In Ohio Turnpike Crash At 14

A 14 year old Vermilion boy died and a 28 year old Vermilion man was injured in a single car crash on the Ohio Turnpike near Fremont. The vehicle veered off the road, struck a guardrail and bridge abutment, killing Howard L Carroll Jr who died at Fremont Memorial Hospital. Driver Robert L Cummings was treated and released. No charges filed. Obituary on page 22.

U.S. military strength in Vietnam falls to 247200

The United States reports a weekly drop of 3,700 in South Vietnam forces to 247,200, the lowest in over five years, with a peak of 543,400 in April 1969. The DMZ defense will shift to South Vietnamese forces, prompting withdrawals of U.S. units, including the 1st Brigade of the 5th Mechanized Infantry.

Lorain man held in traffic death case

A 30 year old Lorain man Raymond R. Meza was arrested on first degree homicide by vehicle and related charges for the death of William Davis who was struck while crossing Grove Avenue at 30th Street in Lorain at 2 40 am. Davis 42 from 2246 E 30th St was killed. a witness said the driver stopped briefly then fled. Meza pleaded innocent at municipal court and a preliminary hearing was set for June 24 with bond set at 1400. Pieces of the car were found at the scene. The case was continued to page 4 column 3.
