Supreme Court OKs City Pool Closures Over Desegregation
The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that a city may shut its public pools rather than desegregate them. In Jackson Mississippi the five pools were closed in 1963 after a court order to desegregate. Justices held that financial and safety concerns can justify closures and rejected the argument that past rulings required integration.

Lorain Man Killed in Hit-Skip After Crossing Street
Lorain police seek driver of hit-skip that killed William Davis, 42, of 2246 East 30th Street. Davis was struck in a crosswalk on Grove Avenue near 30th Street and died at St. Joseph Hospital at 2:55 a.m. after the collision. A witness said the car stopped briefly then fled west on 31st Street.

Escapees free hostage in Ohio abducts another
FBI said two Tennessee escaped prisoners abducted John Edward Rose of Weston Ohio early today while he drove a 1969 white over red Dodge Dart with Ohio plate 10097N. Earlier, farmer Hershel Jones hostage was released unharmed near Bowling Green about ten hours after capture.

Doctors fight to save multiple birth survivors
In Sydney, doctors battled to save four of nine Brodrick infants born at Royal Hospital for Women. Four died, two were stillborn, and one boy and three girls remained alive. The mother, 29, had hormone treatment to aid birth after prior Caesareans. The father, a Canberra meat wholesaler, sought a son from the large family.

Detroit mass shooting leaves seven dead and one wounded
Seven people were found fatally shot and one man critically wounded in Detroit in what police call an execution type killing. Investigators found drugs and firearms at the scene, with homicide detectives and the crime lab called in. Man dies as auto falls in river off Broadspan
An Elyrian drowned when his car veered off the East Broad Street bridge into Black River at 2 a.m. The 52 year old driver Jay Burgess of 328 Concord Ave. was recovered inside the car by scuba divers and pronounced dead at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Burgess owned the car, and witnesses described the vehicle hitting the curb, breaking through the railing, and plunging about 50 feet. The death was ruled drowning.
