Lorain firemen call sick in protest over talks
Firefighters in Lorain staged a brief sickout protesting stalled contract negotiations with the city. Captain Anthony Volak said 24 on duty remained full despite 21 scheduled, as overtime bans and staffing limits sparked a partial voluntary return and a minor fire at a vacant three story house where one firefighter was gassed. Mayor Parker may seek federal mediation if stalemate continues.

Stringer calls for special prosecutor in Lorain probe
Democratic nominee Daniel Stringer urges Pleas Judge Paul Mikus to appoint a special prosecutor to oversee the Lorain city funds case. Mikus hinted at overtures but did not identify the proposer. The grand jury probe into former mayor Joseph Zaho rec continues under lame duck prosecutor Joseph Grunda, who lost the Democratic renomination June 3. Stringer says a neutral investigation is needed to avoid political influence. Also, three defendants appeared before Mikus with sentences or probations: Mike Huff for drug trafficking. Marie Costello for bad checks, placed on probation and moving to Winfield. Emory R Mitchell Cleveland on probation for aggravated assault. Frank Estep Oberlin on probation for assault.
