High Wind And Rain Adds To Thrills Of Scout Camporee
Nearly 500 Boy Scouts from Lorain Erie and Huron Counties returned home after a windy storm during the 1939 Camporee at Lorain County fair grounds. Tents blew down many boys sheltered in Merchants Hall and the grand stand. No injuries occurred though many were soaked. The event concluded with a Parade and Scout O Rama drawing a large crowd before dawn.

Instructor linked to two boys escape from Boys' Industrial School
Sheriff Belhorn said an employee confessed helping Jack Hawley and Norman Stanton escape from the Boys' Industrial School in Lancaster Ohio. The boys, ages 17 and 15, were captured in Columbus within 24 hours after fleeing in a rumble seat car driven by Donovan Bryant, a 22 year old teacher at the school. Bryant, who owed money to a finance company, was questioned and later taken to Columbus. no charges were filed. The youths allegedly planned a hold up with a pistol Bryant supplied and clothing changes provided by him.

Three WPA Workmen Die as Train Hits Car Near Ravenna
In Ravenna Ohio three WPA workers John Wagner Leland Golf and Bert Whitlam died when an automobile owned and likely driven by Wagner was struck by a Pennsylvania Railroad local crossing near New Milford three miles southeast of Ravenna. All three residents of Edinburgh Township had been riding the road to WPA jobs for weeks.

Grand jury considers murder case against Lorain man
Grand jurors convened today to review about twenty cases including a first degree murder charge against Joseph Brnadech 52 of Lorain for his wife Anna's death three months ago. Brnadech is recovering from a self inflicted gunshot wound and a note allegedly blaming his wife for poisoning him. Storm claims Elyria man as others escape near Lorain
A sudden storm whipped a calm lake into dangerous whitecaps Saturday night near Lorain and Avon Lake. George Dougherty, 42, foreman at General Industries Co., drowned when his 14 foot skiff swamped about 10:20 P M. His companions Bishop and Noll swam to shore, while two other couples in a boat sank. all three were rescued with Coast Guard aid. Dougherty, a Canton native who lived at 115 Bellfield Street, was a member of St Marys Church and Elyria rifle and horseshoe clubs. He is survived by Mary Bauer Dougherty and daughter Viola. Funeral services are set for Wednesday.
