Local Showers and Cooler Weather Across Ohio Valley

Weather summary notes showers and thundershowers tonight and Sunday with a cooler Sunday afternoon and night. A disturbance spans from eastern South Dakota to the Atlantic coast with widespread showers from the Ohio Valley to the Rocky Mountains and Tennessee. At the University of Newark homecoming Bonzo the seeing eye dog led his blind owner Joseph Melillo to the rostrum where Dr. Frank Kingdon presented an honorary Doctor of Canine Fidelity. Melillo also earned a BA and the John Cotton Dana prize for top grades during four years of study.

Bulla Takes Slim Open Lead Over Snead at Philadelphia

Johnny Bulla of Chicago posted a 68 in the third round to grab a 54 hole total of 211 and lead Sam Snead, who carded a 73 for 212. Bud Ward and Spokane, Washington amateur pressed with 213 as final round action loomed. Bulla spoke of his expectant wife Pauline as motivation.

No Clues On Mrs. Rubens After Russian Sentence

In Moscow American officials awaited word on Ruth Marie Rubens, tied to a passport fraud espionage plot, as she was ordered released from prison and to depart the country. She had been sentenced to 18 months for entering with a forged passport alongside her husband Adolf Arnold Rubens, with 18 months already served awaiting trial. inquiries at hotels yielded no trace of her location.

Baird Heads Alumni For Coming Year

Richard E. Baird was elected president of the Elyria High School Alumni Association at the sixtieth annual reunion in the Elyria High School Auditorium. Mildred Corfman Crowder was named vice president, Marie Jensen secretary, and Frank Yoo treasurer with an executive committee including Margaret Edwards Edith Terrell and Mrs Jensen. John G Belknap spoke on government and youth urging interest in party politics to preserve democracy. Tent Village Of 500 Scouts Opens Camporee At Fair Grounds

A makeshift village of 450 Boy Scouts and 50 leaders from Lorain Erie and Huron Counties formed at the Lorain County Fair grounds for the 1939 Firelands Area Council Camporee. Rain caused brief tent flooding. demonstrations in campcraft knot tying and fire by flint and steel highlighted the event. Tonight the parade through downtown and the Scout O Rama at the grandstand will cap the program with many troops and packs participating.

Unusual Case To Be Heard By Local Justice

A first of its kind case under the farm truck license statute will be heard Monday afternoon before Justice Herbert C. Cummings. William Plas and his son Robert of Oberlin are charged with using two trucks with special farm licenses for non farm purposes. Prosecutors say the trucks were also used to haul milk.

Social Security Benefits Liberalized By House Passage

The House in an extra session backed a liberalized Social Security bill promising $1.71 billion in tax savings over three years. It raised the federal old age pension match to $20 per month per recipient, creating a $40 pension for needy aged, and expanded benefits for married couples widows and minor children. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrived at the New York World's Fair grounds aboard the Warrington amid a heat wave. Lightning Kills Perry Steen During Walk Home

In London Ohio on Friday 68 year old Perry C Steen of South Solon was struck and killed by lightning while walking home from a stream where he had been fishing. He is survived by a daughter Mary and two sons Frank of South Solon and Fred of Xenia.

Charges In Slot Machine Raids To Be Filed Monday

Deputies confiscated five machines at Riverside Country Club in Columbia Township and six at Columbia Hills Golf Course after a Thursday raid. Formal charges were postponed until Monday as investigators identify owners of several machines.
