Elyria District Catholic High School honored 72 graduates at its third annual commencement in a ceremony led by Rev. Martin T. Engelhardt. Richard L. Maher delivered the address as diplomas were presented to a class that began in fresh man year at St. Mary’s and moved to the Gulf road facilities.

Seventeen Elyria registrants pass pre induction exams
Seventeen registrants of the Elyria draft board were accepted for future military service during physical pre induction examinations in Cleveland last Wednesday. Miss Catherine McKee, draft clerk, announced that 17 were accepted and two were rejected, with a transfer registrant accompanying the Elyria group also accepted.

City Sealer Resigns Office in Elyria
Carl Palagyi resigns as Elyria City Sealer and assistant sanitarian effective July 1. He will join Gordon Film Plastics in Akron, having served since 1950. Palagyi, Elyria native and 1944 Elyria High School graduate, will move to Akron with his family. He tested measuring devices and weights of prepackaged goods and, as assistant sanitarian, inspected restaurants and dairies. Dr. Robinson expects a July 1 appointment to replace him.

Wilder Urges Oberlin Grads to Live Deliberately and Intensely
Thornton Wilder, three time Pulitzer winner, urged Oberlin College graduates to live deliberately and intensely, using Thoreau as a symbol of individualism and lifelong learning. He warned that modern youth chase speed and overlook questions after simplifying life and reading to think critically. The ceremony opened with processional music as 419 degrees were conferred by President William Stevens on arts, sciences, and sacred theology degrees.

St John’s Lutheran awards honor two eighth graders

Deputies Investigate Two Weekend Burglaries

Two Sportsmen Injured In West Branch Plane Crash
Lorain county men Anthony Retay and Everett Gordon were hospitalized in serious condition at Tolfree Memorial Hospital West Branch Michigan after a light plane failed during take-off from a cross wind. Retay 31 of Amherst was the pilot and Gordon 33 of Elyria the passenger. Witnesses said the aircraft nosed over as it lifted off during a fishing trip return. Retay owns Retay Welding on 28th Street Lorain. Gordon's address could not be located.

A barn on West Ridge road owned by Carl Fowl burned with $10,000 in losses including lumber hay straw and farm equipment. Lightning struck Rhodes Cafe on Lodi street causing minor damage while downed power lines arced on Stanford avenue.
