Vermilion voters reject city levy deal bleak finances
Vermilion faces a bleak financial outlook after voters defeated a five mill three year general operating levy 848 to 498. Finance director Chris Fisher warned the city will start 1980 with under $1,000 in general funds and about $250,000 less to spend next year, considering potential losses of $112,000 in federal revenue sharing and $120,000 if income tax forgiveness is restored. A November initiative may halt the half percent income tax. The council had planned to restore full forgiveness starting July 1 to sway votes and wages talks with city employees are being shaped by the levy outcome.
