Elyria Turnpike Fight Pauses as Court Backs Home Rule View

Elyria and the Ohio Turnpike Commission paused a two day court fight over the city land needed for the highway. Judge Tudor kept the case alive while noting two weak city hopes including home rule versus state power and claims of abuse in route selection. Two witnesses, former mayor Henry Ault and County Engineer Don Patterson, testified as legal argument continued with an October 1955 deadline looming for highway opening.

McCarthy Says Calls Explode Army Case Details Surface

Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy claimed transcripts of Stevens and Symington calls undermine Army charges. He cited a March 8 exchange about a report on favors for Pvt. G. Kidnap Charge Is Made Against Ex Oberlin Man

Mrs Louise Rhodes swore out a warrant for arrest of her former husband Charles on a kidnaping charge. She reported her eight year old daughter Dorothy Mae has been missing since 10 p m May 29. Police believe he took the girl during a visit to Oberlin with Charles returning to Stirrat West Virginia. Rhodes was divorced in West Virginia seven years ago but the decree mentioned no child.

Civil Defense Test Set For Elyria Lorain June 14 15

Lorain and Elyria area will host a nationwide Civil Defense drill June 14 15 with mock air attacks and bombs simulated by 45 enemy aircraft. Roads will be blocked for the exercise and emergency agencies will coordinate to offset bombing damage in a staged assault involving 41 U S cities and allied sites.

Driver Of Death Car Sentenced

Roy King age 29 of Amherst received an indeterminate one to 20 year term from Common Pleas Judge D A Cook for the traffic death of Emmett Rowland 75 and Wealtha 69 Bowland after a Route 113 crash near Elyria. King pleaded guilty to two counts of second degree manslaughter and will serve the terms concurrently. He was also granted a life suspension of his driving privileges.

Seven-Man Steering Committee Named For City Safety Drive

Mayor J Grant Keys announced a seven man steering committee to organize a city wide citizens safety program. The group formed after a Tuesday meeting of about 25 civic leaders led by Keys and Police Chief James E Boggs. Three Men and Seven Horses Die in Circus Van Wreck

A King Brothers Circus horse van crashed down a hillside near Oil City Pennsylvania. Three circus workers died and six of twelve horses aboard were killed with one more shot. Driver Robert Black 20 escaped with minor injuries after leaping from the runaway truck. Fire from a torch sparked a blaze later extinguished by state police.

COLUMBUS Ohio June 7 UP Director Henry J Robison of the State Welfare Department announced the promotion of Hugh L Leggett 52 of Columbus to superintendent of the State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation effective July 1 Leggett has been identification supervisor in the bureau since 1950 and a former captain of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department He will succeed L A Hollingsworth who retires after 22 years with the bureau including the last four as superintendent.

A wrecking crew at the Tufford residence on Third street sparked a rumor of a hidden pot of money after workmen joked that an old vessel contained cash.
