President Truman rejected as warped minds a report that he secretly plans to capture the Democratic nomination. He said he will attend the national convention only as retiring president after a new nominee is chosen and that the 1952 nominee will not be the current White House occupant.
Elyria attorney Ronald O. Dunn was named to the Elyria Library board of trustees to fill the vacancy caused by C. W. Faxon’s death. Dunn has long practiced in Elyria and once served as attorney for the Lorain County Humane Society, earning the 1947 Elyria Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award for civic work. The current board includes Dunn and four others.
Assistant Prosecutor Harold Ewing said charges of stabbing to kill will be preferred against Mrs. Anna Marie Oppman 35 of Cooley Road R D Grafton held in county jail for the butcher knife attack on her husband George 49 Tuesday authorities said. A mental exam may be requested after a physician reported she is a serious alcoholic and in his opinion dangerous. The couple's 15 year old son was placed with Loram County child welfare board pending action. Mr Oppman was in fair condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital.
In Panmunjom Korea United Nations truce negotiators refuse to forcefully repatriate prisoners of war to Communism. Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison says no barbarous price for forced repatriation and suggests re screening in Communist observers’ presence after an armistice. North Korean Gen Nam II counters with demand for accounting of over 1,000 captured Communists.
Partly cloudy and warmer tonight with a low around 56. Friday remains cloudy with scattered thundershowers and similar temperatures. The Lions Club Carnival runs tonight Friday and Saturday in Cleveland and Abbe Road areas.
An Elyria resident is among the recipients at the Mansfield Sales Division annual service pin dinner of The Standard Oil Company (Ohio) to be held at The Fairway Club. Twenty-two pins for 5 to 35 years will be awarded by W. M. Thomas and M. L. Williams. Guy J. Munger and K. C. Pinyard lead 35-year honorees with Conrad Einwachter at 25 years.
Three 10 and 11 year old boys were found breaking windows in a house being moved for the Lorain-Elyria highway. Police took them into custody and notified their parents they must pay for the damage. Neighbors said other youths also damaged windows in the moving houses.
American troops split a Koje Island prison compound with barbed wire and 400 gas masked soldiers entered behind tanks as 3,000 prisoners shouted defiance. Brig. Gen. Haydon L Bull Boatner led the operation, the sixth Allied entry into a compound since the Dodd kidnapping earlier.
A Royal Dutch Air Force Thunderjet collided with a British Royal Navy minesweeper in the Marshiep Strait during Allied maneuvers. Fifteen men died including 14 British sailors and the Dutch pilot. one British crewman survived and was hospitalized. Rescue crafts retrieved two sailors. one died later.
Ohio Fuel Gas Company employee to be honored for five million accident free man hours since 1939. W H Adams of the American Gas Association will present a certificate at a Saddle Inn dinner in Avon Lake attended by about 400 people. The Elyria District has earned five prior AGA safety awards for million man hours without injury.
3600 spectators witness the 104th Elyria High commencement as 232 seniors receive diplomas on a sunny evening. Four valedictorians lead the processional with music from the Elyria High band. Frederic Snyder delivers an inspirational talk urging education and opportunity in the atomic era.
Elmer Webber of Elyria indicted on manslaughter for wife Juanita’s death, pleaded guilty earlier. On January 5 he was placed on probation by Judge John Pincura after three months in jail. Webber’s beating incident occurred while under liquor influence. He has since maintained good conduct under Alcoholics Anonymous sponsorship.
Ralph T. Bogan 38 a lake seaman is held by Elyria police for Cleveland authorities after stealing a car owned by the Cleveland Board of Education then driving with no license and under the influence. He struck two parked cars on Lake avenue and left the scene. Police spotted him on Broad street and Lodz street and stopped him. He admitted the theft and lack of license. He will be turned over to Cleveland authorities for auto theft prosecution.
The fifth round of government sponsored steel negotiations opens with federal officials hoping a nationwide strike threat will bring peace. President Truman aides preside over talks with CIO President Philip Murray and steel company leaders as the wage talks resume. The Senate faces a three way fight over emergency steel legislation, with Democrats split over two bills and Taft led Republicans opposing both and pressing Taft Hartley action. Humphrey and a Senate Labor subcommittee join to discuss a second bill.
Senator Robert A Taft charged in the Senate that the Truman administration tried to stimulate prices to create a wave of prosperity for the November election. He backed an unsuccessful Dirksen amendment to lift price controls on all agricultural products and said price controls should be removed except for metals used in defense.
State Highway Director T. J. Kauer will meet Elyria city officials and County Engineer Don E. Patterson in Mayor Henry W. Ault's office Monday to discuss local objections to routing the Ohio turnpike through Elyria. Edward Donnelly accompanies Kauer as consulting engineer.
In Abilene Kansas Dwight D Eisenhower said he would likely reappoint General Douglas MacArthur if he is nominated and elected. He praised MacArthurs intellect and military skill and said he would seek out the best brains for his administration. He offered no direct reply on Taft or FEPC and emphasized fairness in federal action.
City engineers and Havens and Emerson representatives conducted a pre final inspection of the 10 foot diameter northeast main trunk storm sewer along Glover's ditch. They checked joint sealing and tiles. final report to follow. If approved, 2 percent of the $450,000 contract will be retained for a year as a bond while testing proceeds.
The Ohio State Highway Department expects about two miles of US Route 20 in Bellevue to start within a week or 10 days. Federal Public Works approval for an 860959 project, with half funded by the federal government, arrived yesterday. Contractor A J Baltes of Norwalk, awarded the bid in April, plans work after utility relocations.
