U.S. jobs outpace Europe and Japan since 1970s
The BLS shows U.S. civilian jobs rose 28.2 percent from 1970 to 1983 reaching 100.8 million, far above Europe and Japan. Unemployment rose too but less than most peers while manufacturing fell only in the U.S. among major nations. Strong female participation and agriculture cushioned growth, yet productivity lagged as the labor force expanded.
