Principal sues over monkey depiction in yearbook
Elyria area principal Ayers Ratliff of McCormick Middle School sues the district superintendent, National School Studios and Universal Publications Inc. for 1.5 million dollars punitive and 500 thousand dollars compensatory damages. The suit filed in Lorain County Common Pleas Court asserts a 1982-83 yearbook caricature portrayed Ratliff as a monkey in an awkward, contemptible light. The defendants allegedly allowed the image to appear falsely and maliciously, creating the impression he behaved like a monkey. The Wellington Board of Education had voted in March not to renew Ratliff’s four-year contract.
