Wallace unlikely to succeed Allen
Governor George C. Wallace faces conflicting legal advice on whether he can appoint himself to fill Senate vacancy left by the late James B. Allen. Alabama lawyers split on steps required for an interim appointment and the need for a special election to finish Allen's term ending January 1981. Wallace’s adviser says self-appointment possible, while an unnamed appellate judge doubts he could avoid resigning first if Lt. Gov. Jere Beasley agrees to back him.
