Reagan pushes tax cut plan despite Democratic opposition

President Reagan, determined to press a 30 percent across the board tax cut over three years, invited Senate and House leaders to the Oval Office to hear alternatives. White House aides said he would go to the public if Congress balks, while Democrats push for a targeted one year cut with aid for the poor and middle class. Reagan’s aides met with Conservative Democratic Forum members, signaling a tilt toward closer Republican alignment on the issue. The president then flew to Virginia, visiting James Kilpatrick’s farm near Shenandoah National Park with Nancy Reagan.
