Arbitrators ordered Elyria city to give 150 non uniformed workers a 58 cent hourly raise from 1980 to 1981 and a 35 cent raise from 1981 to 1982, averaging 10 percent then 6 percent per year. Retroactive pay to AFSCME Local 277 will be in three installments.
Elections Director Jack E. Wolf cited a predicted 30 000 to 35 000 county vote from 137 561 eligible voters with 69 of 423 precincts closed for no contests. Early polling showed minimal turnout at Irving School precincts 2 B and 7 B by 9 a.m. Voters expect heavier activity in afternoon and evening.
The Internal Revenue Service criminal division in Cleveland opened an inquiry into Doctors Clinic two months ago. Co-owner Dr. Leonard Faymore and partner James Bender are among those cited. Federal agents, DEA searches, and undercover visits tied to suspicions of improper narcotics dispensing and cash-only transactions, with clinic finances under scrutiny. The clinic operates New London and Greenwich Medical Clinic and Faymore and Bender also co-own New London Hospital.
Quintuplets born to Mrs. Janice Granata of Findlay Ohio remained in stable condition and fought for their lives at Toledo Hospital. The five infants, weighing 1 pound 9 ounces to 2 pounds 3 1/2 ounces, were in incubators in the NICU on respirators with a 60 percent survival outlook.
Elyria council approves a two stage hike in Columbia Gas bills with a 4.25 dollar monthly minimum service charge and a 2.7 percent price rise for 30 days followed by a 2.57 percent increase and 4.36 dollar minimum next year. Mayor Keys says average bills won’t rise until gas costs do and notes the change targets minimum use charges.
