Church forecasts 160000 miners to end 67 day walkout
UMW President Sam Church Jr. camps on a six day swing through coal country rallying support for a tentative contract with the Bituminous Coal Operators Association. He says 160,000 striking soft coal miners will vote to end the stoppage as a vote nears on Saturday. In Northeast Pennsylvania about 2000 hard coal miners planned to return to work after ratifying a three year agreement ending a 30 day strike. At a Birmingham press conference Church remained optimistic the deal would pass.
