An Elyria man Jimmie Jordan 34 of 430 W 10th St died after his car was struck by a freight train at the Kansas Avenue crossing in Lorain Hospital staff said he died about 10 20 am He was reportedly alone in the vehicle Lorain police investigated the accident and fire rescue reported head cuts and possible internal injuries.
Lorain endured heavy rain with lightning that cut electricity across the city. West-side flooding stalled several cars in areas including the 28th Street subway and Oberlin Avenue as storms moved through Lorain County. Mayor Joseph Zahorec cited clogged storm sewers as a cause.

Bruce Workman 16, of North Ridgeville, drowned while attempting to swim to an island about 35 feet from shore in Beaver's Pond behind West Point Drive. He was recovered 12 feet offshore and died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after being pronounced dead at 3 15 p m. The death is ruled an accidental drowning by Lorain County Coroner William Kishman.

United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim warned at the Habitat conference that world population will double in about 30 years, worsening poverty pollution and housing shortages. He said at least one third of urban dwellers in developing countries live in shanties and called for better use of technical heritage and stronger government action.
