A Washington report traces the creation of Taps by Daniel Butterfield in 1862 during the Civil War and its adoption as a funeral final call. The piece highlights its spread through the Army of the Potomac, standardization in 1891, and continued use in modern posts with bugle calls recorded for alarms and daily life.
Christians in northern Lebanon appealed to President Hafez Assad to intervene amid savage fighting in the Lebanese civil war. They cited the bombardment of Qub yal and Andket by Muslim forces, with Beirut also hit by shelling as Civil Defense urged people off the streets. Death tolls topped 185 killed and about 250 wounded, not counting northern casualties.
Fire units from two departments fought a blaze after a Baltimore and Ohio derailment in downtown Lodi. Four oil tankers burned as spill containment equipment arrived. no injuries were reported and about 2,200 bystanders gathered near the tracks on a hill above ground level. The incident followed a 1974 derailment nearby.
Martha Mitchell estranged wife of former Attorney General John Mitchell was rushed from her Fifth Avenue apartment to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York. She was listed in critical condition after a cardiac arrest, while undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma.
The annual Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m. from the Lodi Street parking lot and proceeds through downtown via West Avenue Broad Street Washington Avenue and Harrison Street to Ridgelawn Cemetery. Ceremonies are slated for about 11 30 a.m.

Firefighter Patrick Cleary died of a massive heart attack after saving a trapped mother and her 5 year old son Angel Muriel from a three story Brooklyn fire. He climbed a ladder twice, first rescuing the child then the mother before collapsing on the sidewalk. Cleary, 49, survived by his wife Eileen and two sons, and had been cited for meritorious performance. He was a Tiperrary native and viewed as a “fireman’s fireman.”
An express train ran onto the wrong track near Tanwen, southwest of Taipei, colliding head on with another express. At least 18 dead and 139 hurt as eight hours into rescue efforts three trapped passengers remained. Engineer Lee Yu-chen reportedly drove warning signals before the crash. the northbound engineer was missing. A full investigation will follow.
Brook Park officials question Pennsylvania lead in Volkswagen plant bid. Councilmen Stuart and Bernath say Ohio has offered full terms, but Pennsylvania may face rail, highway, and port hurdles. They doubt production can start by mid 1977 and note a possible $5 million Ohio loan could have altered the outcome. The fight may still swing back in Brook Park’s favor.
