Oil lobbyists push back on Carter windfall tax claim
In Washington, oil company officials argued President Carter overestimates their Capitol Hill clout as they defend the industry amid his call for a windfall profits tax. A Standard of Indiana spokesman cited depletion allowances and price controls while a Gulf spokesman urged solutions over blame and urged energy cooperation. The protests followed Carter's press conference advocating the tax and warning the lobby will fight its passage.
