Regulation to regulation: Fletcher Electric adapts in Southwick
Roderick Fletcher and his family run Fletcher Electric Co. in Southwick, supplying power to about 300 Connecticut residents near Congamond Lakes. After 45 years without regulation, PUCA inspection prompted rate hearings and brought the business under state oversight, which Fletcher says is manageable despite paperwork. The firm, started by his father in 1931, now relies on two sons to maintain lines and purchase power from Western Massachusetts Electric Co.

Auto layoffs top 30,000 amid truck and car sales slump
UPI reports the U.S. auto industry has surpassed 30,000 layoffs as production lags last year, with Chrysler and Ford hit hardest. Ward's notes weekly car output at 120,023 and truck production at 44,676, while 18 car plants and six truck plants shut for model changeovers or to cut stacks. Ford idled 2,025 workers in New Jersey and Georgia, bringing total laid off to over 13,000. Chrysler about 20,000. AMC 1,200. Industry officials do not expect a repeat of the 1974-75 scale.
