Elyria School Board Re-submits 6.9 Mill Levy Plan

Elyria board votes to re-submit a 6.9 mill levy in a September 26 special election to prevent school closings by late November. Negotiations with teachers and non-certified staff remain incomplete with contracts still undecided as schools open next month. Superintendent Showalter urged earlier action to address funding.

Norwalk drug sweep nets 23 adults and a juvenile

A county wide operation arrested 23 adults including the Norwalk Army recruiter and a juvenile after a grand jury indicted 36 people on 82 charges mainly aiding drug trafficking. Seizures included LSD cocaine PCP and marijuana with the largest haul in Plymouth just over the county line.

No helmet cyclist dies in Lorain County crash

Steven Klingshirn twenty of 14554 Plum Creek Drive Avon died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a Thursday morning crash on Route 82 Island Road in Columbia Township. He was not wearing a helmet and was killed when his motorcycle struck a car driven by Wilma Mullins. The helmet law allows riders 18 and older with a year of riding to go helmetless. Surviving relatives and funeral details follow.

80 year old veteran bikes 1478 miles on Lorain streets

Willford McCain of 3910 W Erie Ave Lorain logs 1478 miles on a bicycle after World War II to stay in shape. He says he wanted to remain in the army but was discharged due to age. He turns 81 on Veterans Day November 11.

Activist's wife given suspended sentence in Moscow

Maria Slepak, 51, a Jewish activist, was sentenced by a Soviet court to three years suspended on hooliganism charges and could join her husband in exile. She sobbed in court, citing her stomach ulcers and support from her people as factors in the lenient ruling. The couple, both critics of exit visas, were arrested June 1 after displaying a sign on Gorky Street.
