The Yelling Yankees saw a managerial change last night after Billy Martin criticized owner George Steinbrenner. Bob Lemon was appointed as the new manager, replacing Martin amid heightened tension and fan reaction.
Amid the battle there was cheer as Pete Rose hit in his 37th straight game tying a National League record from 1945 by Tommy Holmes. The note mentions Holmes congratulating Rose and Rose aiming for major league marks once held by Ty Cobb Willie Keeler and Joe DiMaggio 56 straight games.
The dollar closed at 195.50 yen, a drop from 199.10, amid BoJ selling and renewed fears of further losses. Analysts note European markets steadied slightly as the dollar weakens, with potential inflation risks if the trend continues. A Bank of Japan official warns the currency could dip toward 180 yen without decisive U.S. Japan cooperation.
UPI reports that a weaker dollar raises American living costs as import prices jump and manufacturers raise prices. Japan’s market shows higher dollar sales despite lower unit volumes, with Toyota Datsun and Honda leading price hikes. Electronics costs also rise after past declines.
Margaret Gardiner 18 of Cape Town becomes Miss Universe, the first African winner, after a pageant with 75 contestants. Miss USA Judi Andersen is first runner up. Miss Lesotho complains of unfair judging amid mixed reactions from other finalists and observers. Gardiner plans to model until 21 then study journalism, admires Dr Christiaan Barnard, and hopes to represent her country internationally.
A dry spell continues with tonight and Wednesday bringing sunny skies and warmer temperatures. Lows will be in the mid to upper 60s, highs near 80s, and a 10 percent chance of rain. Winds will be light and variable, under 10 mph. High reached 76 at 12:45 p.m. Monday. low 67 at 6 a.m. today.
Robert H Hall of Brownhelm Town Up is praised for saving David Harris, bedridden with bone cancer, after a Monday fire and propane leak explosion destroyed the Middle Ridge Road home near Elyria. David and Cindy Harris escaped unharmed. Carol Harris, seriously burned, is in St Joseph Hospital. the blast damaged the residence and is under investigation.
