Holstein Breed Origins in Europe and America
The Holstein breed began with Baverians and Friesians in Europe around 2000 years ago in the Rhine delta and Netherlands region. Early American breeders led by Bob Hoffman imported seed stock from Holland in the mid-1800s, expanding Holstein development until a European cattle disease outbreak halted imports. American breeders formed associations that merged into the Holstein Fanciers Association in 1885.
