Budget row over salaries stalls city vote
Continued from pages one and three, the council debated reducing salaries to lower the budget while noting a two weeks unpaid vacation is insufficient for taxpayers. Gerald Martin called payless vacations a farce and urged salary cuts, as Councilman Taylor defended prudence and distribution fears. A July 31 delay was proposed, with meetings set with a citizens' committee and Chamber of Commerce to decide on a budget approach. Taxes on a $5 000 property would total 115 mills, with city operation consuming 21.38 dollars of its share for salaries. Germany spends about 150 million annually on highway construction.
