Alvin attaches memorial plaque to Titanic stern
Woods Hole explorers in the sub Alvin place a 20-pound bronze plaque on the Titanic stern at 12 500 feet depth to honor 1513 victims. Robert Ballard notes the stern is the last part to go under as Alvin transfers the plaque from the Atlantis II. The mission marks the first manned landing on the stern. plans for a robotic recovery were canceled.
