LTV cuts hospital and life benefits for Ohio retirees

LTV Corp halted hospitalization and life insurance for about 32,000 Ohio retirees as it filed for bankruptcy protection. Spokesman Mark Tomasch said benefits could not be paid and that the law requires withholding pre filing expenses. Union leaders criticized the move, planning protests, while LTV argued the cuts lower retiree benefit costs and warned of liquidation as an alternative. Turn to page A-4 for more.

Hold on LTV retirees claims shocks Elyria area hospitals

Blue Cross and Blue Shield told Elyria Memorial and nearby hospitals that they will no longer accept claims for LTV Corp retirees after the steelmaker filed for bankruptcy protection. Hospitals cautioned the order may not stop emergency care but could affect bill handling. St. Joseph Hospital said many facilities will treat emergency patients regardless of ability to pay, while Lorain Community noted limited impact and no contact from Blue Cross on holds.

Vandalism Closes West Park Pool in Elyria

The West Park pool in Elyria was closed after vandalism last night or this morning. The City Parks and Recreation Department expects about three days to clean, drain, refill, and reopen. Vandals climbed the fence, threw tables into the pool, damaged the electrical system, and broke glass on the deck and in the water.

Breno Enterprises pleads guilty in Lorain gambling case

Laurice Koury linked firm fined after Lorain County testimony shows Breno Enterprises faced gambling charges. The 1984 Lorain corporation, formed by Koury with Thomas and Katherine Breno, was fined 500 and ordered to forfeit gaming devices after a Nov. 15 1985 raid on the South Shore Social Club. Thomas Breno pleaded guilty to misdemeanor gambling.

Lakefront suit won't stop Lorain lakefront project

City Councilman Kenneth Shawver said a lawsuit aimed at delaying the lakefront hotel project would only slow things briefly and that development would proceed even if the current proposal is abandoned. Meetings between developers and city officials were set, with Landmark Hotel Corp. and Lorain attorney Leo Koury involved. The suit, filed by Frank Kosco, seeks to halt development proceedings pending resolution of issues including eminent domain.
