LTV cuts hospital and life benefits for Ohio retirees
LTV Corp halted hospitalization and life insurance for about 32,000 Ohio retirees as it filed for bankruptcy protection. Spokesman Mark Tomasch said benefits could not be paid and that the law requires withholding pre filing expenses. Union leaders criticized the move, planning protests, while LTV argued the cuts lower retiree benefit costs and warned of liquidation as an alternative. Turn to page A-4 for more.

Hold on LTV retirees claims shocks Elyria area hospitals
Blue Cross and Blue Shield told Elyria Memorial and nearby hospitals that they will no longer accept claims for LTV Corp retirees after the steelmaker filed for bankruptcy protection. Hospitals cautioned the order may not stop emergency care but could affect bill handling. St. Joseph Hospital said many facilities will treat emergency patients regardless of ability to pay, while Lorain Community noted limited impact and no contact from Blue Cross on holds.

Lakefront suit won't stop Lorain lakefront project
City Councilman Kenneth Shawver said a lawsuit aimed at delaying the lakefront hotel project would only slow things briefly and that development would proceed even if the current proposal is abandoned. Meetings between developers and city officials were set, with Landmark Hotel Corp. and Lorain attorney Leo Koury involved. The suit, filed by Frank Kosco, seeks to halt development proceedings pending resolution of issues including eminent domain.
