Soviet grain needs covered by third U.S. sale totals
U.S. agriculture experts estimate Soviet grain losses from drought at about 15 million tons. The third North American sale brings the Soviets to more than two thirds of their needs, with Continental Grain Co. reporting a 5.6 million ton wheat and corn shipment in addition to last week’s 3.2 million ton wheat purchase and 2 million tons of Canadian wheat. Corn deliveries start in October and run through August 1976. The Agriculture Department says this year’s harvest could sustain Soviet purchases totaling 12 to 14 million tons without harming U.S. supplies or other buyers.
