James and Marilyn Sweeney of Elyria describe fishing Lake Erie from Beaver Park for years. They report two consecutive days of catches, a six and a half pound walleye, and a similar second big catch, aided by green Erie Dearien bait and large crawlers.
Anglers report fish with black spots caused by a parasitic flatworm of genus UVALIFER. The worm’s life cycle involves birds as hosts, snails as intermediate hosts, and fish as the final host where cysts form. No human cases. cook fish thoroughly to be safe. a similar yellow grub can also be killed by cooking.
Oxbow Lake remains mostly dry while rehabilitation continues with water only in deeper channels. Fish left in the lake may be taken by normal angling. other fish excluding catfish may be hand-picked under daily possession limits. Anglers are warned of soft lake bottoms and possible knee-depth sinking risk as in-lake construction proceeds this summer.
Southeast Ohio muskingum river yields excellent catches with toaker finthead and catfish at night using heavy tackle. Dillon Lake near Zanesville reports good channel and flathead catfish. large bass near shore. Kokawa? Cowan Lake sees largemouth bass from shallow to deeper water as day progresses. Acton Lake remains a busy summertime bass lake with larger bass biting wax worms, worms, crickets in deeper water.
Maya Boekeler vacationing from West Germany captured the girls 13 and under title at the Rocky River Kiwanis Club junior tennis tournament. Event drew players from Midlleville Heights, Bay Village, Lakewood, Berea, Falls, Fairview Park, Westlake, North Olmsted and Rocky River with directors Mike Patterson and Jeff Sinnena guiding the action at Rocky River Junior High Courts.
The YWCA sponsors bowling classes for children aged 8 to 15 at Redman’s Recreation in Lorain starting August 7. Sessions run Thursdays 4 to 5 30 p m at 5300 Oberlin Avenue. Cost is 28 for four weeks plus youth membership. students receive a free beginner or all condition bowling ball, with pre payment required. Call 244-1919 for more information.
The Black River Athletic Boosters will hold their regular July meeting Thursday night at 8:00 in room 13 of the high school. All interested persons including junior high parents are invited to attend.
Schlater Insurance scored three runs in the top of the second to take control. Steve Stroup pitched all nine innings for Schlater, allowing two earned runs on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Wagner Signs pitcher Steve Strasko also completed the game, permitting five earned runs on five hits with one walk and ten strikeouts. Jay Neber homered for the winners with a double.
