In Managua fire fights erupted as Sandinista guerrillas slipped back into the capital while surrender terms for the national guard to a leftist junta hit a snag. The guard said they agreed to surrender but balked at unconditional arms laydown. Talks resume with Radio Sandino active.
In Managua heavy gunfire near the Intercontinental Hotel followed guardsmen fleeing from Somoza's bunker after his resignation and exile to Miami. The Sandinistas pushed for unconditional surrender while talks in Costa Rica sought a ceasefire, with no agreement by midmorning.
Amherst Hotel associates president Herman Carney says Holiday Inn marks a marketing study to gauge area support for a 7.4 million hotel and recreation complex at Routes 2 and 58. If Holiday Inn fails, Sheraton and Ramada show interest in the 10 acre wherst Plaza site as alternate franchisers.
Lorain developer Carl Gumia says political battles killed his downtown shopping center project worth five million dollars. He laments lost enthusiasm after city officials failed to secure parking, amid a long feud over a land swap with Lorain National Bank to aid the Fourth to Fifth Street site. The city Administrators expressed disgust as the plan collapsed and Gumia confirmed the death of the project.

Marilyn Dietl, a Colchester Vermont housewife, fatally shot her 18 year old daughter Judy on May 5 1978 near Burlington. Dietl was later sentenced to 5 to 15 years for second degree murder. The piece traces the family breakdown and Judy Diets quiet adolescence and troubled path to a life she feared.
President Carter accepts HEW Secretary Calafano’s resignation and plans to replace him with Patricia Harris, currently HUD secretary. Jordan named White House chief of staff and ordered a broad review of officials as Cabinet resignations loom. No formal White House confirmation yet.
Lorain County districts show few openings for next year beyond math special education industrial arts and chemistry physics fields. Administrators praise applicant quality though competency testing emerges nationally as education shifts toward upgrading teacher standards. Locally one district has a testing instrument but does not use it.
