Fire trucks respond to backyard luau cooking in Los Angeles

In the pre-dawn hours of a Los Angeles neighborhood a 20-foot pit was used to cook a 220-pound pig with 180 pounds of yams and pork chunks for 400 guests. James Jiminez, Filipino and chairman of the Polynesian-American Unity Day luau, had a permit for the fire in his yard and neighbors permitted leaf removal from a banana tree for the wrapping. The fire department arrived after neighbors called, discovering it was a cooking event rather than an uncontrolled blaze.

Amherst boy Randy Meyers wins Lorain County Soap Box Derby

Eleven year old Randy Meyers of Amherst roared to first place in the Lorain County Derby racing a low long maroon car down the 975.4 foot Rt. 58 track in 3.05 seconds earning a trip to Akron for the All American Derby and a $500 savings bond plus multiple trophies. His brother Kim previously won the local derby and Matt Gard placed second.
