Avon Lake Guardsman safe in helicopter plunge
A National Guard helicopter crashed into Berlin Reservoir near Deerfield during a training flight from Akron Canton Airport to Youngstown. Warrant Officer Jeffery Peacock of Avon Lake was rescued by boaters before the craft sank. pilot Capt. Vincent Osekoski and Warrant Officer John Gallagher were also rescued and unharmed. the pilot was lightly injured.

Lt. Col. Dewain C. Vick, 38, formerly of Lorain, and Lt. Col. Thomas B. Estes, 38, of Eubank Ky., will be honored at a Pentagon ceremony with the Mackay Trophy for a record breaking 10 hour SR71 reconnaissance mission. The flight covered 15000 miles at speeds over Mach 3 on April 26 1971, taking two round trips across the northern and central United States and a complete circle of the western states starting from Beale AFB California.

Soldier on leave among two area crash deaths in Lorain County
A 17 year old Vermilion soldier on leave and a Shelby man died in separate crashes. Three others were listed in critical condition at Lorain Community Hospital after the Vermilion road accident.
