Bank vault raid lasts six hours in Waynesburg
Two safe crackers labored six hours to break into Waynesburg Bank vaults. They failed to open the inner safe with $25,000. outside silver and insured losses were small. Painter Elwood Thomas was held captive in the dentist office as the robbers drilled through floors and concrete with acetylene torches. Thomas freed himself, alerted authorities, and the robbers fled in an automobile. Waynesburg lies 12 miles southeast of Canton.

Providence Kentucky July 17 G T Powell U S Bureau of Mines inspector said rescue workers found nine more miners dead in the Davin Coal Mine bringing the total to 28 victims of a dust explosion. Bodies lay behind a barricade 185 feet below surface almost three miles from the shaft. Two notes timed Saturday signaled all alive late Friday and early Saturday before deaths. Thirty eight men were in the mine at the time of the blast. ten bodies recovered, nine others buried in water and debris. Rescue teams moved bodies toward the shaft bottom to be brought up today.
