Car hits train on Rt 60 kills one brother
In Vermilion, Dearl E. Young Jr., 24, of Lorain, died of head injuries after his auto collided with a moving Norfolk & Western freight train at a grade crossing on Rt 60. His brother, 22, was listed in serious condition at St. Joseph Hospital. Police did not release driver details. the train, about 55 mph, struck the side of the lead engine. The car was demolished and the investigation continued.

Lorain County Catholic Education Names First Regional Superintendent
Frank Dobos of Bay Village is named the first regional superintendent for the Lorain County Regional Board of Catholic Education. He will oversee 23 elementary and secondary schools and report to the Cleveland Diocese. Confirmation is expected at a diocesan meeting tonight at Lorain Catholic High School.

About 200 members of the Communications Workers of America walked off at Ohio Bell’s Middletown office ahead of the nationwide Bell system strike. Pickets numbered 15 to 20, saying they were tired of waiting for the official start scheduled for Wednesday. The company reported the local walkout affected roughly 9 percent of its Middletown workforce.

Bike car accident kills area boy 15
A 15-year-old Grafton Township youth, Paul David Reynolds III, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital from head injuries after riding a bicycle on Route 76 and being struck by a car driven by Leonard L. Wiley. Reynolds and friend Terry Blow Jr. were returning from a lawn mowing job when the collision occurred near 1 p.m. Wiley, with a 21 foot trailer, could not avoid the youth despite braking. The crash remains under investigation.

Bernard F. Hatcher a 28 year old of 6851 West Ridge Rd died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after being struck by a car on Rt 113 about 6 miles east of Rt 58. James J Perry 24 of 166 Spruce St Elyria drove the car. Relatives said Hatcher wore dark clothing and was walking east along the road returning from a visit to a North Ridge carryout. No charges filed.
