Half a million workers walked off the Bell system nationwide in the first major phone strike since 1968. The walkout began at 6 a.m. local time as negotiations failed over pay distribution and wage offers. Vandalism was reported in New York area, while AT&T predicted no service disruptions.
About 18 000 Ohio workers join a nationwide Bell Telephone strike over a wage dispute.
