Circus Acrobat Recovers Part Of Stolen Gear In Cleveland Ghetto

Princess Elena Omar a 25 year veteran circus acrobat from Madrid recovered about 6000 dollars worth of feathers costumes capes and equipment after a Friday night theft. Spent a day searching the East 39th to 62nd street area with neighborhood volunteers and even paid children to help. She credited local residents with kindness and said the American people renewed her faith as she prepared to leave for Chicago. The car and some personal items were stolen from a hotel parking lot but police later found the car stripped. Princess Elena plans further recovery efforts before her next engagement with Rudy Bros circus.

Steel demand weak despite threat of walkout

More than 11,000 United Steelworkers members were furloughed as demand for steel remained soft three weeks before the three year contract with major producers expired. U.S. Steel announced shutdowns at Ohio and Illinois plants, with other firms also cutting back as hedge buying waned and import competition rose.

Meany backs wage and price controls to curb inflation

AFL CIO President George Meany says if in Nixon's place he would impose wage and price controls to fight inflation though his group would not push for them. Collision on Rt 18 Kills Two In West Norwalk

A head on crash on Rt 18 about six miles east of Norwalk killed Larry Miller and Randal Reikowsky. A second crash at the scene injured 11, with Talmadge Gentry hospitalized in good condition and Brundage, Rowlands involved in a later crash.

Welfare cases surge in Lorain County first half 1971

Lorain County welfare director Gerard Prinz reports nearly a 50 percent rise in welfare applications for the first six months of 1971, with 1,706 new and 1,302 reapplications compared to 1,137 new and 998 reapplications a year earlier. The increase is tied to local layoffs. total welfare costs exceed 1 million monthly. Statewide June payments rose to 43.515 million, with ADC recipients increasing sharply.
