Big Bonus Is Big Gamble in Baseball
A look at high priced bonus babies like Dave Nicholson shows many fail to reach the majors. The piece cites figures from the 1940s onward, noting players such as Curt Simmons Robin Roberts and Al Kaline among successes, while others like Paul Pettit and Billy Joe Davidson underperform. It also highlights the unpredictability of bonuses versus later performance and recalls Yogi Berra’s modest bonus and differing team choices.
