Goldfine defies questions on finances amid contempt move

Bernard Goldfine refused to discuss his complex finances as a House subcommittee moves toward contempt actions. Subcommittee chair Oren Harris asserted the Boston magnate manipulated funds at East Boston Co and Boston Port Development Co to silence minority stockholders and pressured him to answer about two 1947 $20 000 checks drawn by Goldfine and W J McDonald.

Goldfine Again Refuses Subpoena in Firestorm Hearing

The Boston businessman Goldfine refused to answer questions and declined to reveal services for funds from the Boston Port Company as a House subcommittee pressed for testimony. Security guards and a crowd surrounded him as the subpena was served, risking contempt charges and possible jail.

Welfare Levy Vote Approved in Lorain County

County commissioners approved placing a child welfare levy measure on the November ballot. The levy would be 65 hundredths of a mill, about 65 cents per $1,000 of valuation, raising roughly $390,000 annually for two years. The request comes from the child welfare board which proposed a $432,162 budget for next year. The shortfall would be covered from the county general fund. This marks the first time Lorain County voters would decide on a child welfare levy.

Missing after collision between freighter and fishing boat

A British freighter collided with the New Bedford fishing ship R. W. Griffin about 150 miles east of New York. The captain and engineer were reported missing, another crewman is believed dead, and two vessels’ statuses remain uncertain. The City of Karachi picked up five crewmen, one of them dead, after the 69-foot boat was struck near Montauk Point.

Weather Outlook for Northwest and Northeast Ohio

Weather forecast shows highs 78 to 82 with mostly cloudy skies and little temperature change tonight lows 62 to 66. Scattered thundershowers expected late tonight or Saturday with Thursday’s high 65 to 88 and trace precipitation in the past 24 hours. Oberlin Family Finds Lost Government Bonds In Junked Car

Kenneth Roose of Oberlin Ohio said government bonds worth about eleven thousand dollars were found in the trunk of a junked car in Santa Barbara California. The bonds had been stolen last August while the Roose family vacationed in Northern California and were replaced by the government after the required waiting period.

Severe Weather Triggers Flooding and Casualties Across Ohio

Heavy rains produced three rockslides near East Liverpool and Wellsville closing routes 64 and 38 in Salinesville. Lightning killed Donald Overholser near West Milton, while fires struck Elynn Canton and Massillon. Civil defense evacuated about 200 families as two inches of rain swamped streams.
