The Nixon administration moves to revoke tax exempt status for about 10,000 private schools that fail nondiscrimination tests. Donors would lose charitable deduction for contributions and some schools face local tax burdens. Officials say impact mostly Southern academies. parochial and religious seminaries remain exempt.
Two Elyria churches will sponsor three kindergarten sessions starting in September to help serve about 1276 children who would miss kindergarten after school budget cuts. Grace Lutheran will host one session and Emmanuel Lutheran will run two. Enrollment is limited to 22 per session on a first come first served basis with registrations by mail and church office inquiries.
In Saigon crews recovered the bodies of Maj Gen George W. Casey and six of his men from the helicopter wreckage four days after a fiery crash. The announcement came as fighting intensified in Cambodia near Kompong Som with Cambodian and South Vietnamese forces reporting clashes and a destroyed bridge on the highway between Phnom Penh and Kompong Som.
Nine people died in a head on collision a mile from the Golden Gate Bridge. A small foreign sports car with three men collided with an American sedan carrying six occupants. No survivors were reported and victims’ identities were not released.
Laurie Munningham, 16, daughter of former Mayor Max E. B. Munningham, was abducted after a robbery at Gallagher’s Gift Shop in Lansing. A $5,000 reward and FBI involvement followed as state police and volunteers searched area, while a gunman fled with $60. The abductor’s sketch circulated amid ongoing inquiries.

Reginald Ostrowski of Cleveland recounts the drowning of his brother in law Frank Lapinski Jr at Camden Lake this morning. Lorain County deputies cover the body as coast guard divers search the area.
Frank Lapinski Jr., 19, of 2413 Saratoga Ave., fell from a fishing boat near Oberlin recreation area around 7:30 a.m. while boating with Reginald Ostrowski. He was recovered at 9:10 a.m. and later ruled a drowning after autopsy. The weed filled lake and nearby roots may have entangled him. this was Lorain County’s tenth drowning of the year.
South Vietnamese police detained three American newsmen and briefly held a fourth during a student peace demonstration in Saigon. Gerald Lyles Thomas Fox and John Steinbeck Jr. were arrested and released after embassy intervention while Carl D. Robertson was briefly detained. Steinbeck lost press credentials. Lyles said film was seized. Officials cited mourning armbands and ongoing embassy inquiry.
Hiroshi Yanagida a Kempeitai officer claimed 23 American captives were killed or fatally injured when the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima on August 6 1945 He said 22 were killed outright and one died the next day The report asserts the captives were crew members who bombed Hiroshima and were held in three camps with dog tags kept in a safe that survived the blast.
Harriet Alger accuses harassment by Lorain County Economic Opportunity Committee members including LCEOC president Herman Larkins. She urges reforms such as a management analysis to define duties, establish a parents advisory as policy maker, and separate Head Start offices from LCEOC, asserting parents should initiate policy with decisions by LCEOC.
