The AP reports 61 Americans killed in action in the Vietnam War last week, the lowest weekly total since 1966, with 463 wounded. For six months, U S combat deaths were the lowest since late 1966 while South Vietnamese losses rose, and allied forces claimed 1,395 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese killed.
Maj. Gen. George W. Casey, commander of the 1st Air Cavalry Division, and six crew members, including Spec. 4 Vernon K. Smolik, were reported missing after a helicopter crash. Rescue teams located wreckage. the crash site remains undisclosed for security reasons as searches continue.
Lorain County Regional Planning Commission moved to help the Census Bureau after local totals varied from 255,582 to an estimated 282,800. The group offered to act as a clearing house for forms and to aid in counting uncounted residents, noting statewide and federal guidelines on census accuracy.
