Heat wave grips Ohio with humidity and sporadic relief
Ohio endures a hot stretch with temperatures near 85 in much of the state while humidity remains oppressive. Northern areas may see 70s to 60s, and a half inch of rain in Lorain County eases heat. Hospitals report few heat injuries. CEI records a 1986 usage peak. Weather experts warn fatalities rise with prolonged heat, noting past summers with thousands of deaths and vulnerable groups.

Restaurant operators say the FDA ban on sulfite preservatives for fresh fruits and vegetables will have little local impact. The regulation, effective in 30 days, removes six sulfite types from generally recognized as safe. Sales groups endorsed the ban, noting many eateries already stopped using sulfites, while 500 reaction reports including 13 deaths helped drive action.
