Strongest Southern California quake since 1971 hits Palm Springs area

A 6.0 magnitude quake struck 12 miles NW of Palm Springs at 2 21 am PDT shaking a wide region from San Diego to the San Fernando Valley. It caused rockslides, shattered windows and knocked out power to about 100000 customers, with several reports of panic and a desert hot springs substation outage. No injuries were reported.

Weather Outlook and Navy Pioneer Hyman Rickover Dies

Outside Tonight brings a low in the upper 60s with a 50 percent chance of showers and storms. Wednesday looks mostly cloudy with a high in the low 80s. A-4 reports Adm. Hyman Rickover, the crusty sailor who pushed the Navy into the nuclear era, died today at his home outside Washington, D.C. He was 86.

Continental to add Ridgeville channels to basic package

Continental Cablevision will expand its basic service in North Ridgeville by adding ESPN, MTV, Lifetime and Arts & Entertainment channels at no extra charge. The $10.50 monthly basic fee will cover these additions with Septembers implementation and an Oct 1 price-change target pending council approval. The plan follows subscriber surveys and replaces the prior Group W Cable setup now owned by Continental, with religious PTL added and Home Theater Network dropped.

Mayor orders probe into release before ferry attack

New York Mayor Edward I Koch ordered an investigation into why Juan Gonzalez, a 43 year old homeless man, was released from psychiatric observation two days before he killed two people and wounded nine aboard a Staten Island ferry. Gonzalez was hospitalized after acting strangely and saying Jesus told him to kill, but he was released after promising to seek care at another hospital. The ferry carried up to 500 passengers during Statue of Liberty centennial events. A former policeman subdued Gonzalez with a gun after a five minute rampage.

Goetz charges reinstated by New York Court of Appeals

New York's Court of Appeals ordered Bernhard Goetz to stand trial on attempted murder and assault charges for the 1984 shooting of four youths on a Manhattan subway. In a 7-0 decision the high court reversed lower court rulings and reinstated the charges.
