A 7 0 high court decision written by Chief Judge Sol Wachtler narrows when deadly force can be used in self defense, requiring juries to assess reasonable fear of danger rather than the defendant’s own perception. The Goetz trial date is Sept 2 before Justice Stephen Crane as juror selection begins amid publicity. The 1984 incident on the IRT express left four teens wounded and one paralyzed after Goetz, 38, shot them when they demanded $5.
